IBM launches new high performance private cloud suite
IBM has released a new suite of HPC products that it said would help scientists complete projects that require large computing resources
IBM has developed a new cloud product that it claimed would help scientists tackle analysis and simulation that would normally require large computing resources.
The high performance computing (HPC) offerings from IBM will allow scientists and technologists to link computing resources into a single, private cloud while allowing system administrators to set priorities based on business or technical needs.
The new implementation will provide users with the computing that is needed to support their priorities. For example, instead of segmenting computing resources by department, scientists can now pool systems from across their organisations, as needed, to handle the analysis of massive amounts of genomic data, say, without the need to seek computing resources outside the organisation.
The new HPC suite includes::
- IBM HPC Management Suite for Cloud: A resource manager that enables administrators to manage the cloud, schedule jobs and handle tasks like metering energy usage while allowing end users to view and access the full set of HPC resources available to them in the cloud;
- HPC cloud implementation service from IBM: A new quick-start service to help install, configure and optimise a private or private hosted cloud
- IBM Intelligent Cluster solutions: An integrated, optimized HPC cluster of servers, storage and switches
Brian Connors, vice president of high performance computing for IBM said that the HPC announcement was “an evolution of IBM’s cloud strategy and delivery capabilities with workload and industry optimised cloud solutions targeted at delivering client-ready clouds to help reduce costs, optimise resources and accelerate success.”
