Google Drive set for imminent launch say sources

Google is set to take on the likes of Dropbox and Box.net today by launching its own public cloud store and share service.

A partner release leaked to The Next Web gave away a lot of details of the service, named Google Drive, including the launch date of 17 April 2012.

If the rumours are to be believed, Google Drive will roll out for free with 5GB of storage, easily beating the 2GB Dropbox provides without payment.

The release also revealed the Google Drive application would work easily with both PC and Mac machines, running within the desktop folders.

It will also be accessible over mobile devices, according to reports, beginning with Android and iOS compatibility.

Another technology blog, Tech Crunch, claimed to have already got its hands on the app. The blogger has been able to sign in with his Gmail account information, but the app is yet to connect to Google’s servers and comes up with the error message: “Google Drive is not yet enabled for your account.”

We contacted Google to get confirmation of the launch, but the company said: “We don’t comment on rumour and speculation.”

The reports suggest the URL for the launch will be https://drive.google.com/ but currently the link only offers a 404 error. We will be keeping a keen eye, however, and let you know when the rumoured service becomes a reality.
