In computing terms “virtualization” actually refers to the creation of a virtual version of something that would otherwise actually exist – like an operating system, data storage device or a hardware platform. These can be virtualized, for instance, by being stored in the cloud – giving an enterprise the same access and ability to perform functions but without the same level of overhead and maintenance costs.
