Public sector cloud adoption is on the up in the UK, but the amount spent on projects still represents a small amount of the Government's overall IT spend.
That's according to cloud-based collaboration vendor Huddle, who claims it more than doubled its public sector revenues in the first seven months of its financial year. It also reported a 132 per cent revenue rise compared to the same period last year.
Alastair Mitchell, chief executive of Huddle, said the increase in revenues from UK public sector organisations, such as Surrey County Council, Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, suggest the sector is “really starting to embrace cloud technologies”.
“Whether they're central or local government, education or NHS organisations, everyone is waking up to the benefits of intuitive, scalable and flexible services that support secure cross-firewall working, mobile workforce initiatives and paperless office targets,” he said.
While the government is making headway with its cloud ambitions and his firm’s latest figures show increasing demand for cloud services, Mitchell admitted there is “still a mountain to climb”.
“A lot more pressure needs to come from the top-down as the £63.4 million that has been spent through the G-Cloud is a tiny proportion of the Government's overall IT spend,” said Mitchell
Mitchell also warned public sector organisations considering cloud to be aware that a number of the suppliers on the G-Cloud “don't have EU data centres or pan government accreditation at IL2, so are unlikely to meet their security requirements."
