SkyDrive max cloud storage bumped to 200GB by Microsoft

Microsoft has more than doubled the amount of storage available to SkyDrive users, raising the maximum total to 200GB.

This is the second time in the past month the Redmond giant has upped the level of available storage on SkyDrive products.

The number and size of these files also keeps growing and growing.

In August, the company increased the amount offered to SkyDrive Pro users from 18GB to 25GB free, with the ability to increase that to 100GB if required.

The announcement, which was made on the Inside SkyDrive blog, coincided with the unveiling of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 on 23 September.

Omar Shahine, principal group programme manager for SkyDrive.com at Microsoft, said the increased storage space reflects the proliferation of important files, such as family photos or financial reports across numerous devices.

“The number and size of these files also keeps growing and growing. So we also want to make sure that your total SkyDrive storage space can keep growing in parallel.  So today, we are happy to introduce a new storage option to add 200 GB of additional storage to your SkyDrive.

“Just to put that in context: 200 GB is enough space to take a photo, every hour, from the moment someone is born, to the day they graduate from college,” Shahine wrote.

25GB is available free for all users by default. In the UK, additional storage is charged at £16 per year for 50GB, £32 per year for 100GB and now £66 per year for 200GB.
